Kimos rent a car Is currently not able to rent cars to visitors who are required by law to be in mandatory 10 days quarantine. Customers are only allowed to rent a car with proof of negative covid test or once the quarantine is finished (over 10 days from arrival date). How old you need to be to rent a car in Hawaii ?
Drivers need to be 21 years old and older to rent a car in Maui. There is a “young driver” fee of $5 per day for all drivers under 25 year old. We do not rent to under 21.
I'm less than 25 years old? Are the rates the same?
All drivers under 25 year old have to pay an additional "young driver fee" of $5 per day. This fee doesn't apply to drivers age 25 and older.
Can I pick up and drop off my rental car after closing time?
Yes! All Customers can schedule their arrival and departure any time and any day. We will accommodate to our customers schedules. All our After Hours arrivals and departures will incur in an extra $15 fee to pay the airport parking. Instructions will be sent by email once the reservation is submitted.
What is the minimum age to be able to rent or drive a rental car?
The minimum age required to rent a car in Maui is 21 year old. We don't have any rental options to offer to drivers under the age of 21.

How can I pay for my car?
We accept all major Credit Cards and Debit cards. Please know that some debit cards will require a security deposit. Most of the payments are due on arrival. Some special credit cards and debit cards will required pre payment for booking. We don't accept cash, PayPal, checks or other forms of bank transfer.
What are my mileage limitations?
We offer unlimited free milages to drive around Maui. Just drive as much as you need. Maui is such a beautiful island and we recommend you enjoy your vacation visiting all the incredible places this island has to offer.
What taxes will be added to the rental?
Hawaii GET 4% plus $5 daily Hawaii Surcharge Tax.
All taxes are subject to change in order to comply with State of Hawaii Law.
For all customers that scheduled late drop off we offer the option to leave the rental car in a designated area of the airport public parking, just a short walk from the terminal. We just ask all customers to return the car on time to avoid late drop off fees. Car has to be returned on the date, time and place specified on the rental agreement. Kimos rent a car may charge a late return fee of up to $100 per day for returning the vehicle later than scheduled. You need to inform us ASAP of any changes on your reservation. The operation of our booking system depends on customers returning vehicles as scheduled.
How much are the airport public Parking fees?
Please understand that $15 Parking is just to pay the public parking facilities and Kimos rent a car does NOT profit from any parking fees. For customers arriving on Sundays (when our shop is closed) the airport parking fee will be more than the regular fee of $15 (and can be up to $30 on arrival). All the rest of the week the arrivals and departures are $15 and you can avoid those fees if you pick up or drop off the rental car from our shop in kahului during our open hours of operation.

How much fuel should be in the tank when I return the car?
Our gasoline policy requires to return vehicle with over 1/4 gasoline tank. So no need to fill up the gas tank on your departure day. You just need to return the rental car with the same amount of gas as you had on arrival. Our fuel policy was created to make it simple for our customers. We don't want to overcharge customers with gasoline fees, when they don't return the car with full tank as most companies do. We just understand that people can get overwhelmed when they are going back home and this is our way to help make the departure simple and friendly.
Do I need liability insurance to rent a car?
Kimos rent a car offers secondary liability insurance. The state of Hawaii requires a minimum coverage limit by law for Bodily Injury & Property Damage Liability. However, you cannot rely on our insurance for your liability. Your current automobile insurance coverage will be the primary insurance and may already cover rental vehicles when they are driven by you.

What services are included in the Roadside Assistance?
For those customers that want to pay extra for peace of mind, we offer the option to purchase our road side assistance for extra $5 per day fee.
Our Roadside Assistance includes the following:
- Lockout Service : Gain entry when keys are locked inside the vehicle.
- Jump-Start:If your vehicle experiences battery failure, we’ll provide a jump-start.
- Flat Tire Assistance or Tire Replacement: We’ll replace a flat or damaged tire with the spare, or get the car towed to the nearest service facility. (Please note that the renter might incur the cost of the tire repair or replacement, depending upon the circumstances.)
- Fuel Delivery : If you run out of gas, we’ll deliver 3 gallons to your location and bill you separately for the fuel.
What happen if my vehicle keys get lost or wet?
If the electronic keys get wet, the key will not work any more and vehicle will not start. Please surfers don’t go in the ocean with the keys in your pocket. Electronic keys are very expensive. A spare key will cost from $100 to $300 to make a replacement. Avoid loosing keys, locking car with keys inside or damaging keys with water.
If you loose or lock the car with keys inside you have 2 options.
- One option is to go to our shop in kahului during business hours and get a spare key. If you lost it, you are responsible to pay for a copy of the key.
- Your other option is to call a lock smith company to make a new key in the spot. Our 24 hrs emergency phone system will redirect your call to one of the companies that can help you in this situation.
What happen if my car battery is dead?
We monitor our vehicle batteries in a regular basis and we make sure all our cars has good quality batteries. If the battery died because of customer neglect, the customers is responsible to jumpstart the vehicle. Please make sure to turn lights off after using the car to avoid battery problems.
Am I required to purchase your CDW insurance?
Damage waiver or collision damage waiver (CDW) is an optional damage insurance coverage that is available when you rent a car.
Car rental companies treat the CDW as a waiver of the customers right to pay for damages to the car rental.
When a customer does not buy CDW he is liable for 100% of damages by accident, vandalism, weather, etc., the customer and their personal insurance must pay to the rental company the full cost of repair, plus administrative charges and, in some cases, loss of use.
Our car rental CDW Insurance rate is $10 per day with a deductible of $1000. This mean that the renter is responsible for the first $1000 charges and any additional charges are paid by Kimos Rent a car.
We recommend before purchasing CDW to check if your own personal auto insurance or credit card may cover any damages or loss to the rental.
We rent Compacts, Midsizes, Wagons, SUVs, Minivans & Pickups. We have 2 Different price categories to chose from: Older and Newer.
- Our older models are between 2003-2007 and are a bit more used and rugged, This older category is perfect for people that are on a budget, Most of our older models have cold AC but it’s not guaranteed
- Our newer models are between 2005 to 2012. We recommend this category for renters who want something a bit nicer , newer and on discount rate. A.C. is Guaranteed in our Newer Category.
What is the procedure in case of mechanical failure?
Mechanical problems can happen even to a brand new car. In case of mechanical issue we will replace the car rental immediately. Our Roadside Assistance is free for all inherent mechanical faults related to the rental car. We ask customers to contact us if they have any concern or questions about the car.
What is the customers responsibility when renting a car?
Some mechanical failures are the renters responsibility. Renter is responsible to pay attention to the car temperature. If a major oil or water leak occurs, and/or vehicle overheat , renter need to stop driving the car immediately and contact our shop. If renter keep driving a vehicle that is overheating, then the motor will break down and customer will be fully liable for repair costs.
Renter is also responsible to use low gear while driving down Haleakala. It is very important that renter understand the need to drive safe while going downhill. Instead of using brakes to slow vehicle down on a steep grade, use what is known as “engine braking” using 1st or 2nd gear (Low Gear) and avoid damaging or overheating the vehicle brakes. Renter is responsible of break damages and towing expenses in Haleakala area. If you notice your brakes loosing efficiency and a burning smell, Stop the vehicle and allow brakes to cool down for at least 45 minutes. Make sure you use Low gear and brakes judiciously.
Is there any area in Maui that is prohibit to drive?
Vehicle is not to be operated on Highway 31 from Kipahulu to Ulupalakua (unpaived road). If car breaks down, is stranded or requires towing on that part of the highway, renter assumes full responsibility for all towing and repair costs. That area of Maui doesn’t have phone reception so is very difficult to ask for road assistance. So no renters should drive in that road or any unpaved roads.
What happen if i have an emergency in the middle of the night?

What if I return the car earlier?
If you return the vehicle before the original return date, you will not be refunded any portion of the days the car was rented and $50 early cancellation fee will apply for early return cancellations.
What is the grace period for returning a rental car?
We have a 30 minute grace period for returning the rentals. If the vehicle is returned within 3 hours of the time it was rented on a subsequent day, additional day charge will be added to the rental. Late return fees will apply for no notice of returning vehicle later than schedule. The efficiency of our booking system depends on customers returning vehicle on schedule, specially during our high season months. We are committed to enforce schedule drop offs policies in order to avoid overbooking situations that may affect other reservations. Mahalo for understanding. What happen if i have a flat tire?
all our car rentals have great quality tires. Our tires are carefully inspected and replaced in a regular basis. If you experience a flat tire you will have all the necessary tools to replace the tire for the spare one. Then you can drive to the shop and we will fix the flat tire. If the tire can not be fixe and has to be replace, due to side wall puncture, renter will be responsibility for the cost of the new tire.
What if I have a broken window while renting a car?
When should I pay for my rental car?
Payments are due on arrival. We don't process payment upon Booking. We accept all mayor credit cards and debit cards. Some special debit cards will required a security deposit or payment upfront. All our prices are in U.S Dollars.
Do you accept driver's from other countries?
Yes we accept driver licenses from all over the world. Our only requirements are that all drivers need to be at least 21 years old and all licenses needs to be valid.
All rental cars need to be return exactly at the date and time specified on the rental agreement. Customers have the option to make changes to their drop offs in advanced. We have a strict return policy to prevent overbooking. Our booking system depends on rental vehicles to be returned as scheduled.
Do you have to clean the rental car before returning it ?
We ask customers to return cars in the same condition as when the rental cars were delivered or picked up. Please don't leave food or trash inside the car. Remember we have a no smoking policy. Tobacco smoke permeates the interior of a vehicle and leaves behind an irritating odor so it is prohibit to smoke in any of our vehicles. The purpose behind our policy is to make certain that the comfort of all our customers is taken into account.
Cleaning fees will apply for cars returned with cigaret odor and trash.
